Mortal Kombat returns to the big screen

Fourteen years after Mortal Kombat: Annihilation lived up to its name and brought the movie franchise to a close, New Line are rebooting the martial arts fantasy series, following a campaign by writer Oren Uziel and director Kevin Tancharoen.

The pair wrote and produced a short live-action version of the story, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, which showed how the franchise could be reinvigorated. This led to a web-based series, Mortal Kombat: Legacy, co-written by Tancharoen, which has been live since April 2011, and now to a full-length feature.

Mortal Kombat was created in 1991 and the first video game released in 1992. A ninth game, rebooting the series, came out at the same time as the web series of mini-features. All the various iterations take place in a universe that consists of six realms, created by the Elder Gods.
