John Williams, the man behind the iconic themes for Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Indiana Jones among many others, is to be the first composer to receive AFI’s Life Achievement Award.
“John Williams has written the soundtrack to our lives,” Howard Stringer, Chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, said in a statement. “Note by note, through chord and chorus, his genius for marrying music with movies has elevated the art form to symphonic levels and inspired generations of audiences to be enriched by the magic of the movies.”
He will receive the award at at the AFI’s gala Tribute on June 9 in Los Angeles. Williams’ music will next be heard on Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
