Born in Germany, Adam moved to the UK when he was 13 in 1934, and after service in the Second World War, joined the film industry. His sets graced Bond films from Dr. No to Moonraker in 1979, with his other genre credits including Night of the Demon, Dr. Strangelove, the Harry Palmer spy thrillers, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for which he designed the very different car from that Fleming had described in his novel. His work on the proposed Star Trek feature Planet of the Titans was never used.
He won two Academy Awards and was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Art Directors Guild.
