Finally the concluding issue of this series is upon us and it’s time to see how the two iconic teams escape from Vandar the Stone and his evil empire.

Warning: This review contains spoilers!

Last month’s reveal that it is none other than Q who is the source of Vandar’s powers came as a disappointing surprise. Once an interesting character who introduced an entertaining element of chaos to Star Trek, Q has now become an overused narrative trope. His use in this series felt like a last ditch effort when nothing better came to mind.

Kirk and company endure some obligatory time in the agony booth which provides an opportunity for Kirk to throw out some meaningless bravado. This is then followed by a condescending and preachy speech about the wonders of the Federation and how enlightened their reality is compared to Vandar’s.

Meanwhile Spock and Brainy figure out how to release Q back in the distant past. Q sets the timeline straight, everyone forgets the entire adventure ever happened and the universe returns to normal again. Sigh.

The ‘and then they all forgot’ ending has to be one of the most dull, coming second only to ‘and then they woke up’. Having the characters forget all that has happened to them robs the story of any meaning or relevance. In this case it was a fittingly underwhelming ending to a series that was always by the numbers at best.  2/10

  1. That’s a fair assessment of the final issue. I liked the series overall, but I can’t argue that the ending dropped the ball. I realize that the way the story sets itself up it couldn’t have had anything but that ending, but I was hoping against hope that there would be a rabbit pulled out of the hat at the end to make the ending meaningful.
