Merlin: Review: Season 2 Ep 12: The Fires of Idirsholas

The Knights of Medhir are revived by Morgause as she lays her plans against Camelot.

Although very much putting the pieces in place for the season finale, with Merlin finally living up to his promise to free the Great Dragon, and Morgause and Morgana reunited, this episode sees Merlin realise the responsibilities that come with his powers. The scene in which he, very reluctantly, poisons Morgana is all the stronger for his having come to the decision without an opportunity for massive soul-searching with Gaius beforehand.

It’s also a strong episode for Arthur, as we see his total dedication not just to his father, but to all that Uther represents. The moment between him and Merlin before he goes out to face the Knights on his own could have been mawkish, but both Bradley James and Colin Morgan play it straight, and it works.

Making the sequences with the Dragon less prevalent this season was a wise decision on the part of the producers, and his dialogue is a lot sharper, expressing some of the frustration that the audience has felt at Merlin’s behaviour. With him finally goading the warlock into action, the final episode promises much.  7/10
