True Blood: Review: Season 5 Ep 7

HBO, 22 July 2012

Sookie and Jason learn a thing or two from the fairies, Sam follows his nose, Hoyt goes to the dark side, and Lafayette has a really bad day. But none of that is a patch on the dilemma Eric and Bill are faced with after Russell Edgington turns the Authority into his own little fiefdom!

True Blood was always bonkers, but this episode takes the biscuit. Almost without batting an eyelid Russell is back in full camp flood and enacting some grand plan involving the Sanguinista cause and Lilith’s blood. It all turns slightly silly though when the whole lot of them go strutting their stuff through the streets of New Orleans like so many Travolta’s in Saturday Night Fever. Still, Denis O’Hare is always fun to watch, but he is given a run for his money by Alexander Skarsgård who grabs the screen in much subtler ways during all the mayhem.

Rightly, the Authority plot takes up the larger part of the episode, meaning the multiple subplots don’t really get much of a look in. Fleeting glimpses of the other threads don’t really satisfy, but that seems to be the nature of the game for this season.

Verdict: Stayin’ alive!

Episode 6 ‘In The Beginning’: 7/10
