Review: Doctor Who: CC 409: Shadow of the Past

[In memory of Caroline John, whose death was announced today, this is our short review of her second Companion Chronicle]

Simon Guerrier’s Shadow of the Past sees Caroline John reprise her role as Third Doctor companion Liz Shaw. It’s a darker tale than usual, emphasising the human cost of UNIT’s battles with alien menaces, as Liz Shaw relives a Mim invasion.

What makes it work so well is that this story is predicated on the edgier Doctor of the seventh season, and while John may not get all the nuances of Pertwee’s vocal mannerisms, the spirit of both his and Nicholas Courtney’s performances that year is evoked well. 7/10
